California gives appliance repair customers more protection than most states, and two rules are worth knowing before a technician arrives.
The price has to be in writing
A registered repair dealer must give you a written estimate for parts and labor before repairing, and it can't bill more than that estimate unless you agree first. A diagnostic fee is allowed, but you have to be told the amount before the home visit (Business and Professions Code section 9844).
The company should be registered with the state
Businesses that repair appliances register with the Bureau of Household Goods and Services as Electronic and Appliance Repair Dealers. Ask for the registration number and check it on the BHGS license search, which shows whether it's current and any discipline on record.
