Samsung appliances talk in two-character codes, and many of them point to something you can fix in the laundry room or kitchen without a service call. Others mean a part has failed. Before you book: is the fridge broken, or in Cooling Off mode?
A Samsung refrigerator showing OF OF, O FF, OFF OFF or scrolling temperature bars isn’t broken. It’s in Cooling Off mode, which Samsung also calls Demo or Shop mode, built for showroom floors. The fans and lights run, but the compressor doesn’t, so neither side gets cold.
Samsung says no service is needed. The way out depends on the panel. On some models you unlock the panel and hold a set of buttons together for a few seconds; on Family Hub models you switch it off in the Fridge Manager app’s settings. Samsung lists the exact combination for each model in the user manual and on its support site.

Samsung washer codes, grouped by cause
Samsung uses several codes for the same fault depending on the model’s age and display. Its support page groups them like this.

Two details from Samsung’s notes are easy to miss. First, the drain hose should sit no less than 6 inches and no more than 8 inches into the drain pipe. Second, don’t remove the screw on the back that holds the drain hose in place, and if the holder is missing, Samsung says service is required.
Codes Samsung lists without owner steps, such as communication errors (AE, AC), heater errors (HE, HC) or motor speed sensor errors (bE, 6E), get one instruction: power the washer off for two to three minutes, and request service if the code returns. Three Samsung recalls to check
Top-load washers, November 2016. About 2.8 million Samsung top-loaders across 34 models, made and sold from March 2011 to November 2016, were recalled because the top could detach from the chassis during use. Remedies included a free in-home repair with a warranty extension, a rebate toward a new machine, or a refund for recent purchases.
Top-load washers, December 2022. About 663,500 washers in the WA49B, WA50B, WA51A, WA52A, WA54A and WA55A series, sold from June 2021 to December 2022, could short-circuit and overheat. The fix is a free software update, delivered over Wi-Fi or with a dongle Samsung mails for non-Wi-Fi models. CPSC told owners to stop using washers that hadn’t been updated.
Slide-in electric ranges, August 2024. About 1.12 million Samsung slide-in electric ranges with front-mounted knobs, sold from May 2013 through August 2024, were recalled because people or pets could turn the knobs on by accident. Samsung sends free knob locks or covers matched to the model.

What Samsung’s warranty covers
Most Samsung appliances come with a one-year manufacturer’s warranty for parts and labor, starting on the purchase date. Some parts are covered longer:
- Refrigerators: five years of parts and labor on the sealed system (condenser, evaporator and compressor), and ten years of parts coverage on the digital inverter compressor.
- Washers and dryers: ten years on the Digital Inverter motor. Other parts follow the standard term.
Samsung is clear that only authorized Samsung service centers can perform covered repairs. You start a claim through Samsung’s repair service page or your Samsung account, with the model, serial number and proof of purchase. Samsung has also run limited-time promotions that extend the standard term, so check your own product’s coverage in your account rather than assuming one year.
When an independent Samsung repair company makes sense
After the first year, most repairs on a Samsung are out of warranty unless the failed part is the sealed system, the inverter compressor or the inverter motor. That’s usually when a local independent shop is the practical route, and we’ll connect you with one that works on Samsung. Before you agree to a visit, find out:
- the shop’s registration number with the state Bureau of Household Goods and Services;
- whether the diagnostic fee is credited if you go ahead with the repair;
- whether the parts are genuine Samsung and listed on the invoice.
Get the quote on paper before the back panel comes off.
