Los Gatos sits where the valley floor meets the Santa Cruz Mountains, and the Town says a large part of it lies in a Very High Fire Hazard Area. That shapes how appliance trouble plays out here. PG&E can cut power for fire safety, and the Town tells residents to be ready for outages of two to seven days, which puts every refrigerator and freezer in town on the clock.

Before PG&E shuts off the power
In a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS), the first thing at risk is the food in your refrigerator and freezer. A little preparation buys you time.
Get the alerts. PG&E sends shutoff alerts by email, phone call or text, and it lets you add alerts for any address, which helps if you own a rental or look after a parent’s house in the hills. PG&E warns that in some cases the first alert may come the same day power goes off, so don’t count on a long lead time. The Town also posts Los Gatos updates through its Notify Me service.
Put thermometers in the fridge and freezer now. The FDA recommends appliance thermometers in both, with the fridge at 40°F or below and the freezer at 0°F or below. During an outage, those two numbers decide what you keep.
Keep the freezer full. The FDA’s figures give a full freezer about 48 hours and a half-full one about 24. The difference is a whole day of shutoff.
Refrigerated medicine needs a plan. The Town points residents who store medication in the fridge to PG&E’s Medical Baseline program, which adds extra alerts before a shutoff, in some cases in person.
During the outage: the 4-hour and 48-hour rules
Once the power is off, the refrigerator will keep food cold for about 4 hours if it stays unopened. After that, the FDA’s rule is to discard refrigerated perishables (meat, poultry, seafood, milk, eggs, leftovers) that have been above 40°F for 4 hours or more. Frozen food holds much longer: roughly 48 hours in a full freezer with the door shut.
A few Town instructions matter for your appliances too:
- Unplug appliances and leave one lamp on, so you’ll know when the power is back.
- Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed.
- Run generators, camp stoves and charcoal grills outdoors only, and never use a gas stove to heat the house.
After the power comes back: what to check before calling
When the lamp comes on, plug the refrigerator and freezer back in and give them time with the doors closed. Then work down this list:
- Read the thermometers. Food in the freezer with ice crystals, or at 40°F or below, can be refrozen, per the FDA. Anything else in doubt goes.
- Check the breaker panel. A tripped breaker after an outage can look like a dead appliance.
- Listen for the compressor. If the fridge is plugged in, the breaker is fine, and it still isn’t cooling or the compressor never starts, that’s a repair call. Same for a freezer that won’t return to 0°F.
- Check the ice maker and water dispenser. Make sure they’re turned back on and the water supply valve is open before assuming a fault.
- Test the range and oven. The clock and electronic controls may need resetting after an outage. If a gas oven won’t ignite or an electric one won’t heat once you’ve reset the clock and controls, book a visit.

Mountain water on the hillsides
San Jose Water serves Los Gatos and draws on three sources: local mountain surface water from the Los Gatos Creek and Saratoga Creek watersheds, where it manages about 6,000 acres of land, plus groundwater and imported surface water. According to San Jose Water, residents of the Santa Cruz Mountain District and parts of Los Gatos receive the locally treated mountain water.

San Jose Water counts anything over 120 ppm as hard, so mountain water qualifies, though it’s far softer than the utility’s groundwater. Old houses downtown, winding driveways uphill
Los Gatos has some of the oldest housing stock in our service area. Census figures put about 8% of housing units before 1940 and about 71% before 1980. The Town’s own history traces the Broadway, Bayview, Fairview and Almond Grove subdivisions to the 1880s, before Los Gatos incorporated in 1887, and Highway 17 was built through the center of town in 1940.
Two practical things follow when you book a repair:
- In older houses, appliances can sit in spaces built for smaller ones. A narrow galley kitchen or a laundry porch can make it hard to pull a fridge or washer out. Describe the space when you call.
- On the hillsides, access takes planning. The Town describes terrain running from the valley floor to densely wooded hillsides. If you’re up a narrow road or a steep private driveway, or behind a gate, say so and pass on directions, so the company can plan parking and whether a replacement part or appliance can be carried in.
